Listening skills is probably one of the top skills teachers (and parents) wish their students and kids had more of. I’ve found that using books to teach the importance of listening helps students

Use picture books so students can see the consequences of listening or not, teach the importance of listening, as well as improving listening skills.

I really like using picture books to help students understand why there have to be rules in the first place, as well as important routines, procedures, and expectations.

Regardless of what grade you teach, it’s important to understand that teachers shouldn’t assume students already know how to do something, or should already know a certain classroom norm.

Everything must be explicitly taught, explained, modeled, and practiced. And then, repeat that process forever until you retire.

And, this includes teaching students the importance of listening.

Listening skills are critical for helping building positive relationships with their peers and adults.

However, students don’t typically know how (or why) it’s important to focus their attention.

Using picture books where students can clearly see the consequences of listening or not, is a great way to to teach the importance of listening, as well as improving listening skills.
